SMS Messaging

Student Section uses SMS to help schools run fundraising campaigns — inviting student participants, notifying parents, and celebrating milestones. This page explains exactly what messages are sent, how recipients are enrolled, and how to stop receiving messages at any time.

Who receives SMS messages

Three groups of people may receive SMS from Student Section on behalf of a school:

  • Student participants — students whose phone numbers are added to a campaign by their coach or athletic director. They receive fundraising invites, milestone updates, and personal fundraising links.
  • Parents / guardians of students under 13 — when a coach marks a student as a minor, a parent consent request is sent to the parent's phone or email before the student can access the platform.

How recipients opt in

Student Section uses a school-mediated enrollment model. Phone numbers are provided to Student Section by the school's coach or athletic director — the same staff member who manages the team roster. No phone number is collected directly from students without a coach submitting it.

Before any message is sent:

  • The school (through its authorized coach or AD) imports the team roster into Student Section. During this import step, the coach is presented with an explicit acknowledgment — a required checkbox — confirming that the school has obtained the necessary parental or user consent to contact each listed participant for school-fundraising purposes. The campaign cannot be activated and no messages can be sent until this certification step is completed.
  • For participants under 13, a parental consent request is sent first. No fundraising messages reach the student until the parent approves.
  • Every initial message includes the Student Section name, the school's name, and clear instructions to reply STOP to opt out immediately.

This model is consistent with how schools communicate with families through other school-provided platforms (email, portals, notification apps) where the school acts as the data controller and the platform acts as a school official under FERPA.

Message frequency

Message frequency varies by campaign. A typical fundraising campaign sends 3–5 messages per participant over 2–4 weeks:

  • 1 initial invite
  • 1–2 follow-up nudges (sent by the coach on a schedule they control)
  • 1 final push (48 hours before the campaign closes)

Coaches control the send schedule and can disable nudge types. Participants can reply STOP at any time to end messages immediately.
